Introduction: as a re-emerging infectious disease, the study of the incidence of tuberculosis (TB) acquires great importance in the current context. After being considered a controlled health problem, it is necessary to know its current state and its possible dynamics in the future for its early arrest.
Objective: to characterize the behavior of the incidence of tuberculosis in Cuba between 2012 and 2019.
Method: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of patients diagnosed with TB in Cuba between 2012 and 2019 was carried out. The universe was made up of all patients diagnosed with TB in the given period. Sampling was not carried out. The variables age, province, location of tuberculosis (pulmonary or extrapulmonary) were studied. Descriptive statistics were used. Rates were used as a summary measure.
Results: in Cuba, from 2012 to 2019, 5,260 cases of tuberculosis were reported. The incidence rate was 49.1 per 100,000 inhabitants and decreased by 2.1% for 2019. The province with the highest incidence was Ciego de ?vila with an average rate of 11.2 per 100,000 inhabitants. Pulmonary tuberculosis had a frequency of 88.4%. An increase in the incidence rate was estimated for 2022, which could reach a value of 5.9 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Conclusions: TB has maintained a slight downward trend in general in the country, however, a possible increase was foreseen for the year 2022, which hinders the eradication of this disease in Cuba.
