Severe anemia due to Hookworm disease in Cienfuegos: a case report

Introduction: hookworm is a health problem, with a low incidence in Cuba.
Objective:?to describe the diagnosis with severe anemia secondary to hookworm.
Clinical case: 36-year-old patient, a smoker, from a rural background, with a low socioeconomic level and a four years history of anemia. 15 days ago, she began with marked weakness, headache and dyspnea, accompanied by a feeling of stomach fullness and loss of weight. On physical examination she presented mucocutaneous paleness and on complementary tests, low hemoglobin levels (60 g/L) and corpuscular constants, as well as eosinophilia. Direct examination of feces reveals hookworm eggs. Transfusion of red blood cells and treatment with antiparasitics is indicated.
Conclusions: Confirming the existence of this parasitosis highlights the need to strengthen its control with the implementation of prevention programs, as well as sanitation and parasitological study of similar conditions.
