Characterization of patients with breast cancer in Puerto Padre, Las Tunas, 2023

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. In the municipality of Puerto Padre, the number of affected patients is increasing, and researching on the subject is decreasing.
Objective: To characterize clinically, epidemiologically and surgically the patients with breast cancer treated at the Puerto Padre hospital during 2023.
Method: Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study in 31 patients treated at the Guillermo Domínguez López hospital, who met the inclusion, exclusion and discharge criteria. The variables used were sex, age, risk factors, signs and symptoms, affected breast, histological type, stage and type of surgery. The ethical principles established in the Helsinki declaration were met.
Results: Female sex predominated (93.54%) and ages between 51 and 60 years (38.7%). Sugar consumption was presented as a risk factor in 100% of the patients. The stony nodule was the most frequent sign (100%). Infiltrating ductal carcinoma occurred in 80.64% of patients. Stage III predominated (38.70%), so the most commonly used surgical technique was modified radical mastectomy (93.55%).
Conclusions: Patients with breast cancer in Puerto Padre were characterized clinically, epidemiologically and surgically. Interventions should be developed to promote proper breast self-examination.
