VIH/Sida, una pandemia marcada por el estigma y el rechazo

En 1981 emergieron los primeros casos de Síndrome de Inmunodeficiencia Adquirida en hombres jóvenes. Cuba, reportó sus primeros casos en 1986. Esta pandemia asociada al estigma, afecta en la actualidad a diversos grupos poblacionales, millones han enfermado y muerto por el virus y sus consecuencias sobre el sistema inmunitario. El acceso al tratamiento antirretroviral ha ido en ascenso, pero persiste la problemática del diagnóstico tardío, en especial, en países con pocos recursos. Una proporción significativa de personas busca atención médica con infección avanzada, lo que conlleva una mayor progresión de la enfermedad, desarrollo de resistencia a medicamentos y aumento de la transmisión. Esto resalta la necesidad de la detección temprana y la adherencia al tratamiento para mejorar el pronóstico y la calidad de vida de los pacientes.
