Dentistry After 1959 in the Municipality of Bejucal

Abstract

Introduction: The historical evolution of dentistry in Bejucal after the revolutionary triumph of 1959 has been scarcely explored in local historiography. Its relevance lies in recovering the institutional legacy and key figures who advanced oral healthcare by integrating social and technical perspectives.

Objective: To characterize the historical development of dentistry post-1959 and its leading figures in Bejucal.

Methods: A qualitative historical research study was conducted, combining documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews. Bibliographic sources in Spanish and English with full-text availability were included, totaling 19 references.

Findings: The establishment of the Department of Dentistry at the Community Polyclinic and the subsequent founding of the Bejucal Dental Clinic marked significant milestones in oral healthcare for the population. These institutions expanded service coverage, incorporated technological advancements such as autoclaves and prosthetics equipment, and structured school- and community-based care programs. The clinic also became a teaching hub for the practical training of dental students and dental care technicians.

Conclusions: The legacy of the personalities studied exemplifies the integration of revolutionary commitment and clinical excellence, as well as the local roots of Cuban dentistry’s social approach. The evolution of infrastructures—both the Community Polyclinic and the Dental Clinic—reflects continuous adaptation to population needs in prevention and accessibility.
