Antimicrobial Resistance of Staphylococcus Aureus in Blood Cultures
Keywords:
Gram-positive bacteria, drug resistance bacteria, microbiology, Staphylococcus aureusAbstract
Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for a large number of isolations in health services. In the province of Mayabeque, it is one of the main pathogens of interest due to its ability to resist antimicrobials, and proper monitoring of this is vital.
Objective: To characterize the antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus aureus isolated in blood cultures.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out. The universe was made up of the 60 blood cultures that were processed during the year 2023. The six blood cultures positive for Staphylococcus aureus were selected as a sample. Statistical analysis was used. The variables were: number of processed blood cultures, service of origin and antimicrobial resistance, a variable evaluated according to the availability of antimicrobial discs in the hospital.
Results: Of the 60 processed blood cultures, six were positive for Staphylococcus aureus, 10%, the Service with the highest incidence was Internal Medicine (n=4, 66.67%). Erythromycin turned out to be the antimicrobial with the highest resistance, with (n=5, 83.33%), while the one with the best sensitivity was chloramphenicol (n=5, 83.33%).
Conclusions: The incidence of positive blood cultures for Staphylococcus aureus during 2023 was low. The Internal Medicine Service provides the highest number of positive samples. Erythromycin stands out for its low effectiveness, on the contrary, chloramphenicol shows high efficacy in treating infections associated with the germ.
