Abstract

Introduction: Natal teeth appear in the oral cavity from birth and neonatal teeth during the first weeks of life. Their incidence ranges from one in 2000 to one in 3500 live births. It is more frequent in females than in males, with a ratio of three to one.

Objective: To describe the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of natal and neonatal teeth associated with dental diagnosis and treatment.

Methods: Searches were performed in the SciELO, BASE, SCOPUS, PubMed, and Redib databases. A search was carried out for terms related to natal teeth combined using Boolean operators. 25 references were selected.

Development: Natal and neonatal teeth are a dental anomaly that must be carefully assessed, their mobility, integrity and clinical characteristics are estimated, these can cause feeding disorders, traumatic sublingual ulcerations and concerns about their aspiration. Their early eruption is associated with alterations in enamel mineralization. They can be small, conical, with hypoplastic enamel and dentin and with little or no roots. Tooth extraction is the immediate treatment in some cases.

Conclusions: The etiology of natal and neonatal teeth is unknown. The lower central incisors are the most frequent, predominantly in females. These can be observed with various clinical and histological alterations such as Riga-Fede disease. Tooth extraction is indicated if it is supernumerary and has mobility with risk of aspiration.
